MAMA BLESSINGS

Honouring and celebrating the rite of passage from maiden to mother

What is a Mother Blessing?

Mother Blessings are a beautiful alternative to the more traditional baby shower where the focus is on the baby and gifts. They are intimate and meaningful gatherings honouring and celebrating the mother-to-be and her transition to motherhood, whilst at the same time helping create a foundation of support.

During the gathering she is showered with love, support and encouragement by her nearest and dearest. The women gathered around her share stories and words of wisdom, set intentions and wishes for the Mama and her motherhood journey. Gifts are created as reminders of the love and strength of her village as she transitions through the sacred rite of passage from maiden to mother (or new-again mother).

The experience leaves the mother-to-be feeling mentally, physically and emotionally ready for the birth of her baby. She will feel empowered, uplifted, supported and connected to her mama community.

“Just as a tree grows best when anchored firmly in the earth, so can a pregnant mother feel strong and capable when supported by a sisterhood of nurturing friends”

— April Lussier

Things to consider:

  • A Mama Blessing is completely unique to each individual Mama. The rituals and activities chosen for the sacred ceremony should resonate and feel aligned with the Mama-to-be.

Some activities you might like to consider include:

    • Story and wisdom sharing from those present

    • Beading a blessing necklace or bracelet for her to wear during labour

    • Affirmation card writing

    • Love letters to Mama - notes of encouragement, support or funny stories for the Mama to read when she is in the depths of labour or trenches of early motherhood.

    • Bath salts - adding dried flowers and essential oils as each woman shares her wishes for the Mama

    • ‘Web of support’ - yarn is passed around the circle and each woman ties it to her wrist until the Mama has birthed her baby

    • Flower crown - each person contributes a meaningful bloom to create a crown for the Mama-to-be to wear on the day of her Blessing

    • Belly art, or henna painting

    • Introductory phone or zoom consultation to discuss your wishes for the day

    • Preparation plan outlining who is responsible for different aspects of the day, and items required for hire or purchase

    • Use of Sacred tool kit on the day - cleansing (sage/palo Santo), decorations for sacred circle (crystals, dried flowers, candles)

    • Hosting of ceremony (approx 2hrs)

    • Mindful Mama gift bag for the Mama-to-be

    • Please note food and beverages are not included but I am more than happy to offer recommendations for suitable suppliers

  • Prices start from $250 which includes everything outlined above. Should you require any additional items or services these will be at an additional cost. I’m more than happy to discuss your requirements and budget.

  • It is highly recommended to keep the gathering to an intimate number. This is completely personal, however a maximum of 15 is generally recommended.

Keep the guest list for your (or the mother-to-be’s) nearest and dearest. Those who lift you up, support you and love you unconditionally. Your high vibe crew who you feel safe to be completely yourself with to be free, open and surrender.

  • A Mama Blessing can be held anywhere as long as it is a space which feels safe and comfortable.

Consider privacy and the scene you wish to set. What do you need to create a sacred space?

Mother Blessings are inspired by an ancient Navajo ceremony called a Blessing Way. To show our respect for traditional cultures a portion of all
